What is the best AI coding assistant in 2026?
Cursor if you want an IDE that is an agent. Claude Code if you live in the terminal. GitHub Copilot if your company already pays for GitHub and you want the default.
Is Copilot still worth it?
Yes as a baseline, especially in VS Code and GitHub. It is no longer the most interesting agent. It is the most deployed.
Should companies ban these tools?
Ban secrets in prompts, not the concept. Use privacy modes, licensed models, and review like you would a junior's PR — because that is what it is.
Local models?
Useful for air-gapped and cheap autocomplete. Still trail frontier models on hard multi-file refactors. Continue + Ollama is the honest local stack.
