An AI coding assistant if you already pay for ChatGPT
You already have a model tab. Here is when that is enough, and when Cursor or Claude Code is still worth a second seat.
The expensive mistake in 2026 is stacking ChatGPT Plus, Copilot, and Cursor because a thread said so. You already pay OpenAI. Codex / ChatGPT's GitHub agent is #5 on our list on purpose: the model is the product, the IDE is still second.
This note is the decision tree for people who open ChatGPT every morning and wonder if the other logos are a tax.
What your ChatGPT plan already is
It is a reasoning tab, a rubber duck, and — in 2026 — a cloud/CLI agent that can touch a repo. That is enough for one-file fixes, explanations, and 'write me a test'. It is not enough if you want the loop inside the editor: see the diff, run the test, apply the patch, stay in the file.
OpenAI Codex belongs on the ranking because OpenAI-standard companies will take this path of least resistance. IDE depth still trails Cursor. Privacy is still homework.
When to buy the second seat
Buy Cursor if you live in a monorepo and the job is agent-plus-editor. Forked VS Code, model choice, rules files. It sits at 9.6 because the cockpit is the product. You will over-trust it. Review like a junior's PR.
Buy Claude Code if you already live in a terminal. Less pretty. Often more thorough. Not an IDE. If you wanted a GUI, this is the wrong click.
Stay on Copilot if GitHub already pays the bill and the team will not adopt a second IDE. It is the most deployed, not the most interesting. That is a feature in a bank and a bore in a five-person startup.
Do not buy three
ChatGPT plus Cursor is a common honest stack: chat for design, agent IDE for the diff. ChatGPT plus Copilot plus Cursor is usually waste. Pick the editor agent. Keep the chat you already have if it earns its tab.
Local Continue + Ollama stays the air-gap stack. Quality tracks the GPU. If legal said no US API, that is the note — not a ChatGPT workaround.
Questions
I pay for ChatGPT. Do I still need Copilot?
Only if your company lives in GitHub and will not let you run Cursor. Tab complete at volume is still Copilot's killer app. It is not the best agent.
ChatGPT vs Cursor for a whole feature?
Cursor (or Claude Code) for the repo loop. ChatGPT for the spec and the argument. Using only the chat tab for a multi-file refactor is how you get confident wrong code.
